Opening Thoughts

I'm still captivated! Just back from Harbin, I'm still enchanted by that dreamlike winter wonderland. As a southerner, seeing such stunning ice and snow scenery for the first time was absolutely mind-blowing! No exaggeration - Harbin has been incredibly popular this winter. In just 20 days from December 11th to 31st last year, the Ice and Snow World received nearly 640,000 visitors - it's been wildly popular! The "Ice City" truly lives up to its name!

Watching the wave after wave of ice and snow check-ins in my social media feed, I've realized that ice and snow tourism has evolved from a niche activity into a new lifestyle. Whether it's a spontaneous snow trip with friends or a cozy winter vacation with family, it makes this winter truly special.

Northern Splendor

When it comes to ice and snow tourism, the North is absolutely king! This year's Harbin Ice and Snow World is incredible, themed "Winter Dream Asia, Love of Ice and Snow" to build excitement for the 2025 Asian Winter Games. The park covers an area equivalent to 100 football fields, using 300,000 cubic meters of ice and snow - the scale is simply enormous!

I'll never forget my first step into the park. The swirling snowflakes, towering ice sculptures, colorful light shows - it was breathtakingly beautiful! At night, the entire park transforms into a dazzling ice castle, so magical it feels like stepping into a fairy tale. The intricately carved ice sculptures are awe-inspiring in every detail.

The park's technological elements amazed me most. Harbin Ice and Snow World collaborated with HIT to develop advanced smart ice-making equipment. These devices not only precisely control ice and snow temperature and texture but also enable intelligent monitoring and management. It's incredible to think about all the high-tech behind these glittering ice sculptures!

Besides Ice and Snow World, Harbin's Sun Island Snow Expo is another must-visit spot. The snow sculptures there are all masterpieces, especially the main sculpture "Oriental Dragon" - 30 meters tall and majestic, it makes for incredible photos!

I also tried some unique northeastern ice activities. Ice bicycles, ice sleds, ice bumper cars - each activity was addictive. The ice bumper cars were especially thrilling, much more exciting than on land. Gliding on ice and gently colliding with other cars - what a rush!

Southern Breakthrough

Ice and snow activities in the South have been a pleasant surprise. Who says southerners can't enjoy winter sports? Sichuan's Shimian County has made an impressive move! They've perfectly combined hot springs with snow activities, creating the novel concept of "hot spring skiing." Imagine skiing during the day and stargazing from a hot spring at night - what an amazing contrast!

Wuhan's indoor ski resort really opened my eyes. Though the snow is artificial, the experience rivals outdoor venues. Impressively, their monthly ticket revenue reached 20 million yuan, a shocking figure! Clearly, southerners' enthusiasm for winter sports matches that of northerners.

I recently met an interesting guy at the ski resort, Oubeid Mohamed Salem, a student from Mauritania. He told me this was his second time experiencing winter sports in Changchun, and this time he brought several African friends. Watching them play happily in the snow, I realized winter sports truly bring joy across cultural boundaries.

The indoor ski resort in Shenzhen is also impressive. While it might be t-shirt weather outside, inside you experience sub-zero temperatures and swirling snowflakes. This contrast is fascinating, no wonder so many Shenzhen residents come here to "escape the heat" on weekends.

Chongqing has also stepped up, building several indoor ice rinks. On weekends, they're packed with children learning to skate. Watching them glide joyfully on the ice reminds me of my own excitement when first trying winter sports.

Global Perspective

Looking beyond China, Nordic ice and snow tourism is a true treasure! The Lapland region has become incredibly popular, with European tourist numbers growing 60% from 2015 to 2023. Behind these numbers are countless unique winter experiences attracting global visitors.

The most enticing must be the ice hotels. Entire rooms built from ice, even the beds! Of course, they provide special sleeping bags and warming equipment. Lying on an ice bed, watching the Northern Lights dance through a transparent roof - it's a must-do life experience!

Reindeer sledding is another fascinating activity. Riding a sled pulled by reindeer across vast snowy plains, surrounded by endless white, occasionally spotting wildlife tracks - it's an indescribable feeling.

Ice bathing is even more thrilling! Jumping into an icy lake in swimwear at sub-zero temperatures, then rushing to a sauna - this hot-and-cold experience is supposedly very healthy. Though it seems crazy at first, many become "ice bath enthusiasts" after trying it.

Speaking of unique experiences, Sweden's ice hotel is noteworthy. Every winter, artists rebuild the entire hotel from ice, making each room a unique artwork. Most amazingly, the hotel melts away in spring, only to be reborn with a completely new look the next winter.

Finland's aurora tours are many people's ultimate dream. Watching the Northern Lights from a glass house or chasing them on snowmobiles - these experiences capture people's imagination. Interestingly, many aurora tours now include professional photographers to help visitors capture these magical moments.

Market Analysis

Looking at the data, this year's winter sports market has seen explosive growth! Domestic ski resort bookings have increased by nearly 20% year-over-year, which speaks volumes. Even more dramatically, "skiing" related searches on Ctrip increased by 50% in just one week!

The popularity of Harbin Ice and Snow World exceeded all expectations. On opening day, I arrived two hours early to queue, and it was already packed with crowds. Tickets were extremely hard to get. I later learned many people went to great lengths to secure tickets.

This booming market has driven growth in related industries. Sales of winter sports equipment have surged, especially high-end ski wear and snowboards, which often sell out immediately upon release. The demand for ski instructors is also soaring, with many resorts rushing to train new instructors to meet market demand.

The hotel industry has also benefited. Many hotels near ski resorts offer "ski packages" including accommodation, lift tickets, and equipment rental, which are popular with young people. Some luxury hotels even have special drying rooms for wet ski gear.

The winter sports consumer base keeps expanding. Besides the traditional young crowd, more families and middle-aged/elderly people are trying winter sports. The family market is especially notable, with many ski resorts creating children's areas and family courses to introduce kids to winter sports early.
